Dr. Harper earned her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of California, San Diego. Her research focuses on political processes—including policy design, content development, political contention, and public finance—with a recent emphasis on substantive policy areas such as climate technologies, public health, and gender-based pay inequity. She employs a mixed-methods approach with a strong emphasis on computational and comparative-historical analysis. Her current work integrates a range of advanced text and network analysis techniques, such as probabilistic topic modeling, discourse network analysis, community detection algorithms, diachronic word embeddings, and large language models (LLMs) for tasks like text classification and contradiction detection. She also utilizes predictive modeling frameworks, including text regression and transformer-based architectures, to analyze political discourse and policy evolution. Dr. Harper teaches courses in data visualization, computational text analysis, and related areas at the intersection of social science and data science.
