NMSU AI Research Areas
NMSU faculty are applying AI and machine learning across a wide range of disciplines. These aren’t adjacent — AI is the connective tissue running through all of them.
Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources
Machine learning for crop yield prediction, livestock monitoring, food systems, wildlife conservation, and rangeland management. As a land-grant institution, NMSU’s College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES) and its Cooperative Extension Service bring AI directly to producers, ranchers, and communities across New Mexico. With 37 researchers contributing, this is IAAM’s largest application area.
Healthcare and Biomedical AI
AI applications in clinical decision support, medical imaging, biomedical research, public health, and human movement. NMSU researchers across nursing, public health, kinesiology, biochemistry, and engineering apply machine learning to challenges including cancer biology, healthcare access in underserved communities, and the privacy concerns that come with health data.
Energy, Water, and Environment
AI-driven hydrological modeling, drought forecasting, smart grid management, renewable energy optimization, climate and ecology research, and remote sensing. In a state where water is everything and energy infrastructure is rapidly evolving, NMSU researchers across civil engineering, geography, plant and environmental sciences, and the NM Water Resources Research Institute apply AI to the natural systems that shape life in the Southwest.
Education and Learning
AI in K-12 and higher education, instructional design, AI literacy, educational technology, and the pedagogies that make learning equitable. NMSU researchers work on intelligent tutoring systems, generative AI in the classroom, information literacy, and how educators across grade levels can use AI thoughtfully — including through extension programs that reach communities statewide.
Business, Finance, and Operations
AI applications in accounting, finance, marketing, hospitality, supply chain, and organizational operations. NMSU’s College of Business researchers apply machine learning to questions of IT adoption, decision support, consumer behavior, and how AI reshapes the systems organizations run on — including NMSU’s own administrative operations.
Manufacturing and Industrial Automation
AI for advanced manufacturing, additive manufacturing, materials science, aerospace, and industrial automation. NMSU researchers in mechanical and aerospace engineering, industrial engineering, and chemical and materials engineering apply machine learning to manufacturing optimization, materials discovery, and the autonomous systems that will define the next generation of industry.
Cybersecurity and Critical Infrastructure
AI-powered threat detection, network security, privacy, hardware security, and the protection of IoT and critical infrastructure systems. NMSU’s cybersecurity researchers work at the intersection of AI safety and applied security, including HIPAA compliance for healthcare systems, the security of educational technologies, and adversarial machine learning.
Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences
AI applied to cultural heritage, history, sociology, criminal justice, public policy, political mobilization, and the questions that shape society. NMSU researchers in the humanities and social sciences explore how AI reshapes — and is reshaped by — culture, governance, and human behavior, ensuring AI development reflects the communities it serves.
Foundational AI and Computer Science
Core AI research including machine learning theory, knowledge representation and reasoning, automated planning, explainable AI, generative AI, and reinforcement learning. NMSU’s Department of Computer Science and faculty across mathematical sciences and electrical and computer engineering develop the methods, models, and theoretical foundations that make applied AI possible across every other area on this page.
