Dr. Michaela Buenemann is a Professor and Head of the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at New Mexico State University. Her research focuses on assessing the spatio-temporal dynamics of land system changes, including their human and environmental drivers and their impacts on species distributions, land potential, and public health. Her work is interdisciplinary, international, and collaborative, with contributions primarily in GIS, remote sensing, spatial modeling, landscape ecology, and biogeography. Michaela has published in a wide range of geography, environmental sciences, and GIScience journals, and her research has been funded by numerous state and federal agencies. In the classroom and field, Michaela teaches an array of courses in physical geography, socio-environmental systems, field methods, geographic information science and technology, and geographic theory and research design. With respect to AI, Michaela’s expertise is in Geospatial Artificial Intelligence (GeoAI). She uses GeoAI for remote sensing image classification and spatial modeling, both in her research and teaching (Intro to Remote Sensing, Advanced Remote Sensing, Spatial Analysis and Modeling).
