I am a remote‑sensing scientist and research faculty member at New Mexico State University, where I lead and co‑lead projects that convert satellite data into actionable information for dryland communities. My work lies at the intersection of Earth observation, ecology, and artificial intelligence. I develop methods that leverage cloud computing and machine‑learning techniques for large‑scale mapping of vegetation in arid and semi‑arid regions. I am also involved in projects that apply deep‑learning models to produce high‑resolution maps of vegetation structure—capturing individual trees, shrubs, and herbaceous patches. A frequent reviewer for Nature journals, I co‑authored an invited Nature commentary on AI‑powered tree‑mapping research. I currently advise graduate students whose work combines remote sensing and machine learning to understand dryland landscapes in the United States and abroad.
